This is the third city inside Kathmandu valley, after Kathmandu and Lalitpur (Patan) and lies towards the south east corner of the valley. Bhaktapur was originally called Bhaadgaun. Bhaktapur is home to a major ethnic Newar community called the 'Jyapu's with their rich culture and remarkable works of art. The Bhaktapur Darbar Square is a prime example of this. A major highway, the Araniko Highway cuts through Bhaktapur and connects the north western section of the country to the capital city.
